Eaglecrest High School: AP Music Theory
Project type
Curriculum Design, Classroom Teaching, Music Education
Date
August 2015 - May 2024
Location
Centennial, CO
This is the library of materials that I compiled over 9 years of teaching AP Music Theory. It is by no means exhaustive, as the course evolved a lot over time. However, what remains in this folder are the artifacts that I was able to save from my Cherry Creek Schools google drive and are the most relevant to the course and my thought processes as an educator. AP Music Theory touches on my passion for the academics of music. Understanding the language of music and learning to decipher the underlying structures and methods of music composition can add extra, unseen dimensions to music. A beautiful sounding piece of music might also be pointed criticism, or a commentary on the human spirit, and sometimes the only way to see that is by understanding how composers craft music with novel and traditional techniques. My goal teaching theory was always to have students understand that "rules" are more "guidelines" or "methodologies". Music theory isn't a prerequisite of composition, but composition is a prerequisite of music theory. Students learned what they needed to pass the AP Exam, but they also learned what they needed to create music on their own terms, using their own ideas and ones that I taught in the class.
